High school football fans in Moncks Corner won’t have to travel far to get a glimpse of their favorite team beneath the lights on a night in early August.

The inaugural Moncks Corner Lions Club football jamboree is slated for Aug. 9, with a rainout date of Aug. 10. Third-year Berkeley High School football coach Randy Robinson believed a jamboree was a must when he took the job.

“I think it will be a lot of fun,” Robinson said. “Moncks Corner is a football town. I said we needed to get this thing going when I walked into town. This will be the first one. Hopefully we can make it a tradition.”

Each of the seven squads in attendance will get two quarters of scrimmage time.

The Berkeley Stags, considered one of the better teams in the Lowcountry and South Carolina heading into the 2018 season, will begin play in the jamboree at 6 p.m. against Cross and end the festivities against Cane Bay, concluding seven periods.

Cross and Wade Hampton, led by former BHS coach Jerry Brown, will square off in the second period, followed by Goose Creek and Wade Hampton in the third quarter.

The Gators, who have a new coach in Jason Winstead, take on Colleton County in the fourth period.

The Cougars remain on the field to tangle with Stratford and new coach Dennie McDaniel in the fifth quarter. The Knights then go up against Cane Bay before the finale.

Admission will be $5.

After the Stags went 12-2 last fall, the community is buzzing about the 2018 version of BHS Football. The Stags return most of an offense that lit up scoreboards and the defense showed up strong in spring practice despite losing many key players.

College coaches rolled through in May, Robinson said. Six Stags already hold offers to play at the next level and others are sure to get their shot at college.

“There is definitely a lot of excitement,” Robinson said. “We got close enough to smell it last year and we’ve got a lot of guys back.”

The first official day of practice for the upcoming season is July 27.
