The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office was notified at 4:03 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, by some bystanders about a child being found deceased inside a car at Bishop England High School, 363 Seven Farms Drive.

The victim, who was 16 months old, was pronounced deceased on scene.

According to a statement from Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell, the investigation revealed the mother, who is an employee of the school, arrived at the school around 7:30 a.m. with the child in her car seat, which was in the backseat of the vehicle.

An autopsy was conducted determined the elevated heat temp contributed to the child’s death.

Berkeley County EMS, Charleston City Police, SLED, Charleston City Fire and Berkeley County Sherriff’s Office responded to the incident. The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office, SLED and Charleston City Police Department are investigating.
