In the Wednesday, March 13, edition of The Berkeley Independent, we published a story headlined, “Pinopolis Basin’s people after the war.” The article included inaccurate, offensive characterizations of formerly enslaved Black people in post-Civil War South Carolina and the conditions they faced.

We regret publishing the article and apologize. The article failed to meet our standards for accuracy and lacked appropriate tone and sensitivity.

As a responsible news organization, we are committed to learning from mistakes and taking proactive measures to ensure something like this does not happen again. We value the trust you have placed in us. We are also dedicated to strengthening our relationship with the Black community and ensuring our content reflects all our readers’ diverse perspectives and experiences.

Your feedback is invaluable to us, and we are committed to listening and growing from this experience.

Sincerely,

Brandon Roberts
