Wicks

Stags running back Keshawn Wicks scored four touchdowns in the season opener.

More than 20 miles away from home and around a 45-minute drive, fan support was a tremendous plus in Berkeley High School’s football opener.

Stags coach Randy Robinson says his team needs the same treatment on Friday when Ashley Ridge visits to open the 2018 home slate for Berkeley.

“Our bleachers were full,” Robinson said after a 69-12 win at Stall High School on Aug. 17. “Our fans drove up to Stall and stayed. They didn’t budge in a blowout. Moncks Corner traveled well.”

Ashley Ridge is also 1-0. The Foxes eased past Goose Creek 30-13 and scored in all three phases, returning a kickoff and interception for touchdown to go along with touchdown runs by quarterback Matt Duncan and running back Nick Cunningham.

It will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Ashley Ridge was 7-4 last season.

“There’s no doubt it’s a big step up,” Robinson said. “They will be a tough test for our defense. They’re bigger than us at some positions and I’ve challenged our defensive line. It’s going to get real the next few weeks.”

The Stags travel to West Ashley on Aug. 31 before a bye week. Fort Dorchester, the class of Lowcountry football the last few years, visits Moncks Corner on Sept. 14.

Against Stall, Berkeley raced out to a 28-6 lead after a quarter and went on to outgain the Warriors 541-99. The Stags led 49-12 at the break.

“Offensively, it was a pretty smooth night,” Robinson said. “We cleaned up some things. We scored at will. I can’t complain a whole lot. I thought our offensive line controlled the night.”

Stags running back Keshawn Wicks powered the Stags with 143 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Lence Correthers added 77 yards and a touchdown while Kortez Heyward chipped in 67 yards and one touchdown.

On the offensive front, center Hunter Powers and left guard David Martin helped pave the way for 354 rushing yards.

Quarterback Eric Tuttle was 13 of 26 for 187 yards and also ran for a touchdown. Dervon Pesnell led the receivers with four grabs for 81 yards and a touchdown. DJ Chisolm added three catches for 33 yards and Hakeem Meggett hauled in a touchdown pass for 42 yards. Solomon Butler and Jackson Weathers combined for three receptions for 23 yards. Butler hauled in one touchdown.

Josh Simmons booted nine extra points.

Defensively, the Stags created three turnovers.
