The South Carolina Hurricanes 16-U softball team placed first in its division in the eighth annual USSSA Spring into Summer Classic on June 1-2.

The Hurricanes finished 4-2 and avenged a pool play loss to the Palmetto Poison by defeating the Poison for the tournament championship.

The tournament was played in Lexington and 10 teams competed for the crown.

The Hurricanes are coached by St. John’s Christian softball coach Roger Dennis and feature players from Stratford, Wando, Summerville, Oceanside Collegiate, Berkeley and St. John’s Christian.

The squad also won a tournament in Summerville on June 8.

HSSR all-state picks

The High School Sports Report has announced its spring sports all-state teams.

Athletes from Berkeley, Timberland and St. John’s Christian are among those set to be honored at the prep sports publication’s banquet on June 23 in Columbia at Seawell’s.

Stags baseball players Jeffrey Zeigler and Hayden Dawson were chosen to the HSSR’s Class 5A all-state team. Teammate Rhett Legette was selected to the HSSR’s All-Rookie Baseball team.

Lady Stags softball players Jersey Silver, Haylee Wilkerson and Brooklynn Stueness were named Class 5A All-State. Teammate Gracie Decuir earned a spot on the HSSR’s All-Rookie Softball team.

In Class 2A softball, Timberland’s Abby Prince and Gracie Prince were selected to the HSSR’s all-state squad for that classification.

Charity Dennis of St. John’s Christian was a SCISA Class A all-state selection by the HSSR.

In track and field, Berkeley sprinter DJ Chisolm, Timberland thrower Jamaal McKinney and Berkeley jumper Jaquoia Williams were all-state selections.
