Berkeley relay

Berkeley’s track and field team captured 4x100 and 4x400 relay titles in the 11th annual Cane Bay Invitational on Saturday. DJ Chisolm (clockwise starting from front left), Jeremiah Mack, Antwan Coats and Tre Morrison won the 4x100 in 41.80.

The boys track and field teams from Stratford High School and Berkeley High School were the top squads from the Berkeley County School District in the 11th annual Cane Bay Invitational on Saturday.

Over 40 boys and girls teams converged on Cane Bay.

The Knights amassed 77 points to place second in the team standings behind champion Wando High School with 102 points. The Stags finished with 72 points in third place. Cane Bay’s boys were ninth with 34 points.

The Philip Simmons girls were seventh with 42 points, followed closely by Cane Bay in eighth at 41 points. Goose Creek was 10th with 25.5 points. Blythewood won the girls title with 83 points, 6.5 points ahead of runner-up Wando. Woodland was third with 74 points.

DJ Chisolm led the Berkeley boys, winning pair of individual events and helping out in a pair of winning relays (4x100 and 4x400). Chisolm won the 200-meter dash (22.10) and long jump (23-08) and ran a leg in the 400-meter relay (41.80) and 1600-meter relay (3:27.47).

Berkeley’s Tre Morrison took first in the 400-meter dash and competed on both winning relays. Jaquon Williams was another winner for the Berkeley boys, reaching the top of the podium in the 110-meter hurdles (15.68).

Antwan Coats was also on both winning relays for the Stags. Jeremiah Mack was on the 4x100 and Marcel Jackson was on the 4x400.

Stratford’s Owen Smith (400 hurdles, 60.08) and Philip Simmons’ Noah Ward (1600 meters, 4:24.47) were more boys winners from the Berkeley County School District.

Girls individual winners from the district were Philip Simmons’ Hailey Meyers (1600 meters, 5:18.90), Goose Creek’s Ameya Gant (high jump, 5-02) and Berkeley’s Karmen Taylor (discus, 128-01).

Berkeley girls soccer 3 May River 1

Alyssa Morrell scored a pair of goals off assists from Shelby McCutchen to lead the Berkeley girls soccer team to a 3-1 victory over May River on Friday.

Courtney Rees added a goal for the Lady Stags, who play at Hanahan on April 4.

Berkeley trailed 1-0 before scoring three goals in the second half to win.

Berkeley baseball 13 Philip Simmons 7

Berkeley’s baseball team used an eight-run sixth inning to avoid an upset at Philip Simmons on Friday, March 29.

Philip Simmons led 6-5 after five innings before Berkeley erupted to pull away.

Rhette Legette had two hits and knocked in three runs while Hayden Dawson, Jesse Free and Cole Mitchum drove in a pair each. Jeffrey Zeigler chipped in two hits and scored three runs.

Reliever Hunter Hicks earned the win on the bump for the Stags. He allowed four hits and four earned runs while striking out three batters.

In the decisive inning, the Stags loaded the bases with one out and Free walked to force in the tying run. Mitchum followed with a two-run double and Legette drove in a pair on a single. Dawson drove in two runs later on a single to make it 13-6.

Palmetto Hurricanes 34 Carolina Spartans 19

The Carolina Spartans, who play home football games at Cainhoy Elementary, dropped to 1-4 on the season with a 34-19 loss to the visiting Palmetto Hurricanes on Saturday in a semi-pro football game.

Quarterback Ricky Thornley led the Spartans with three touchdown passes. Receiver Jarret Jiles hauled in two touchdown passes and finished with four grabs for 103 yards. Jeremy Little hauled in Thornley’s other touchdown pass.

Sean Winns made two interceptions for the Spartans defense and Tre Young added another pick.

Palmetto, from Columbia, got 150 yards rushing and two touchdowns from running back Shawn Copeland.

The Spartans are on the road Saturday and return home on April 13.
