The Berkeley High School boys 4 x 100 meter relay team ascended to the top of the podium with an impressive showing in the 27th annual Bojangles Track and Field Classic on Saturday in Columbia.
More than 80 boys teams and 70 girls squads from multiple states converged on Spring Valley High School for the meet.
The grouping of Tre Morrison, DJ Chisolm, Jeremiah Mack and Antwan Coats dusted the field in the prestigious meet, crossing the finish line with a time of 41.48, the state’s best 400 relay time this spring. They came in 0.33 ahead of runner-up Z.B. Vance.
They also took gold in the Berkeley County championship earlier this month, setting a new county meet record at 41.80, which was also a school record.
The Berkeley girls had a runner-up in the event, Karmen Taylor in the discus with a mark of 132 feet, 10 inches.
The Cougar Classic was at Colleton County High School on Saturday.
Summerville swept the team titles, followed by Cane Bay in both boys and girls. Hanahan’s girls placed third.

Z eigler wins HR Derby
Berkeley High School’s Jeffrey Zeigler won the Hanahan Invitational Tournament’s home run derby on Sunday afternoon, hitting 37 home runs in four regular 2-minute rounds and two one-minute playoff rounds. Zeigler knocked off Jonathan Barham of Hanahan in the final. It was Zeigler’s second clutch performance in less than a week.
The 50th annual H.I.T. begins April 15 and winds down with the championship games on April 18.
St. John’s Christian 9 Holly Hill Academy 2
Charity Dennis, Emma Roberson and Mary Davis each collected two hits as St. John’s Christian coasted past Holly Hill Academy 9-2 on Friday.
Dennis drove in three runs while Beth Mitchum, McKenzie Ellis, Katelyn Ware and Mary Davis knocked in one each.
Hannah Roberson was the winning pitcher, striking out nine batters and allowing no earned runs. Holly Hill had three hits.
St. John’s Christian 7, Holly Hill Academy 5
Evan Mizzell knocked in three runs and Gavin Driggers was the winning pitcher in St. John’s Christian’s win over Holly Hill.
Driggers scattered seven hits and allowed three earned runs while striking out two batters in six innings.
Josh Legnard fanned two in the seventh to earn the save for the Cavaliers and also scored twice, the only player to cross the plate multiple times.
Dylan Parsons chipped in two hits and drove in a run along with Hagen Gregory, Legnard and Driggers.
