The Moncks Corner Dixie Boys (14U) were far too talented and experienced for the opposition in the district all-star tournament.
Capped with a 19-0 rout of North Charleston in a championship game that lasted just two and a half innings on June 28, Moncks Corner was 4-0 in the tournament and outscored opponents 60-3 along the way.
Team chemistry is the plus that’s harder to see but it manifested itself on the scoreboard, too.
“These kids have been together for six or seven years,” Moncks Corner coach Steve Pauley said. “We’ve got seven guys that played JV or varsity baseball and two guys were the best on their B Team. This is one of the most complete teams I’ve ever seen as far as the No. 1 guy to the 12th guy on the bench.”
Before beating North Charleston twice, Moncks Corner coasted past Summerville and Mt. Pleasant in its first two games. Moncks Corner needed 14 innings to finish off its four contests.
“We’ve checked the box on this one but we’ve still got a long ways to go,” Pauley said. “We’re going to celebrate tonight but we’re getting back to work sometime after the fourth.”
Pauley’s team advances to the state tournament July 19-24 in Bluffton, with hopes of moving on to the Dixie Boys World Series in Aiken Aug. 3-7.
Team members are JP Proctor, Dylan Lambert, AJ Legette, Mason Salisbury, Hagen Gregory, Miller McGuire, Jackson Blackburn, Gavin Driggers, Ryan Pierce, Ben Cohen, Keith Stevens and Hunter Weathers.
Seven players in the group were on Moncks Corner’s Dixie Junior Boys (13U) that advanced to that division’s world series in Louisiana last summer. Another starter from that squad could be back from an arm injury.
“We’ve got 10 pitchers on this team,” Pauley said.
Pauley expects significantly more resistance awaits Moncks Corner in the state tournament.
“We know we’re going to run into some guys with equal talent,” he said. “There will be a team like a Hartsville or a Sumter team that’s always very good. We’re not taking anything for granted but we’re preparing to beat those teams.”
Pauley is assisted by Butch Watson, Pete Myers and Chad Salisbury.
