Train derailment causes road closures

Clean up crews at the Orangeburg Road railroad crossing.

A Norfolk Southern train that derailed between Orangeburg Road and Campbell Thickett Road created some delays but no public safety concerns.

No injuries were reported and emergency assistance was not required during the incident. It was not a hazardous derailment, according to officials.

During the area cleanup, the railroad crossings at Orangeburg Road and Campbell Thickett Road were closed for a time.

These closures were necessary for the Norfolk Southern crews to access the area safely.

The closures lasted through Saturday.

Last year in March, passengers on the Amtrak train that stops in North Charleston had to push back their trips by at least 24 hours when four cars derailed, according to local media reports.

In 2018, there were 1,327 derailments in the United States, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
