Suspect still on the run following manhunt in Berkeley County

William Casselman

After several days on the run and an exhaustive search, William "pee wee" Casselman is in custody. He was wanted for attempted murder out of Saint Stephens. He was apprehended on Colonel Maham in Pineville.

For several hours on last Thursday St. Stephen Police along with deputies from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office hunted the woods around the Macedonia area for William Casselman, a suspect in the attempted murder of a person shot in the face.

It was St. Stephen’s call but the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the attempted arrest and subsequent manhunt along with the St. Stephen Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Office.

“The St. Stephen Police issued the warrant and called us to assist with the warrant,” said Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis about the search for Casselman. “I had close to 30 detectives and deputies out there.”

It is common practice for deputies to be involved in arrests by another department if the suspect is in their jurisdiction.

According to officials, Casselman was ready to turn himself in but when deputies and officers arrived to meet him he never showed up. Then Casselman pulled up to officers in a car and got out of the vehicle near Farm Road and ran off; the ensuing search lead into soggy, dense woods.
