Special election fills seat of the late Ken Gunn

Phillip Obie II won the special election held on June 25.

Based on numbers from the Berkeley County Election Commission, 1,094 of the 16,255 registered voters in District 3 cast ballots in the special election on June 25.

The special election between Republican Phillip Obie II and Democrat Tory Liferidge was held to fill the vacant County Council seat following the death of Republican Ken Gunn.

Obie II, had 729 votes and Liferidge got 359 votes. Obie II, received 66% of the 1,094 votes cast. The Clerk of Council Office said Obie’s swearing in date is tentatively set for July 8.

The district is made up of portions of Goose Creek, Spring Grove Plantation and Foxbank Plantation.

Former Berkeley County Council member Ken Gunn, passed away from lung cancer in February. Gunn had served since 2013.
