More than 200 local women devoted time and money to help build an affordable home in Moncks Corner as a part of a nationwide effort to spotlight the home ownership challenges faced by women.

Tacisha Pinckney and her three children live in a three-bedroom home with three other family members. For Tacisha, the word home means “having a bed to sleep in and not the floor. It will be a blessing.”

Like all Habitat homeowners, Pinckney has contributed a minimum of 350 hours of “sweat equity” working on the construction of her home and the homes of others. Habitat families also participate in financial stability programs designed to strengthen the entire family and help to ensure their success as homeowners.

The new homeowners will continue to make monthly payments on a low-cost, no-interest mortgage, which in turn will go toward building more Habitat homes in Berkeley County.

Showhomes Charleston, owned by Lorelie Brown, partnered with Berkeley Habitat to make the Home Dedication a special moment for Pinckney’s youngest son, Jordan. The company has dedicated its time and services to surprise Jordan with a fully furnished bedroom. The bedroom will be revealed to Jordan and the entire family at the Home Dedication.

“This project for Jordan’s room has meant so much to us, not only because we are able to serve our community and Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County, but also because we have gotten to know Tacisha personally," Brown said. "It makes us happy to know that our talents and vision will make this house into a home for their family and that Jordan is in for a surprise."

After the dedication ceremony, will take place at 11 a.m. on July 14, attendees will tour the new four-bedroom home, which was made possible due to generous donors, donated materials, volunteer labor, and the dedication and commitment of future homeowner families.

The project is the 36th Habitat Home built in Berkeley County. It is located at 115 Jenkins Street in Moncks Corner.
