Chad Caldwell, of Summerville, passed away on July 4. Caldwell was a former police chief for Moncks Corner and North Charleston. He was 73.
Caldwell was born November 29, 1945 in Berkeley County, son of Philip Caldwell and Beatrice Orvin Caldwell. He started his career in the Army National Guard and then the SC Wildlife Department.
Caldwell spent several years working for SLED, which led to opportunities to become a Captain for the North Charleston Police Department. He went on to serve as Chief of Police of North Charleston and Moncks Corner Police Departments.
In Moncks Corner, he spearheaded the department’s summer youth program, according to the Post and Courier.
The program combined educational field trips and life lessons, with the intent of encouraging a positive relationship between police officers and the local youth. He retired from the department in 2015.
He is described as a loving father and grandfather and a person who always tried to help others. Surviving are two daughters- Shannon C. Padgett (Sam) and Carol Alexander (Rob); a son, Wayne Kinard, and seven grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Chad was predeceased by his brother, Taska Caldwell, sister, Gail Perpruner and his first wife, Gwen Caldwell.
His funeral service took place Sunday at Russell Funeral Chapel in Moncks Corner.
