Berkeley Soil and Water Conservation District was recently named the Outstanding Conservation District of the Year and awarded the “Pump Award” by the South Carolina Association of Conservation Districts (SCACD). The award is given annually at the Partnership Conference in recognition of outstanding work performed by a district and the impact it makes in the community.

There are 46 conservation districts in the state representing each county. Conservation districts are governed by five non-salaried commissioners, two of which are appointed by the Department of Natural Resources and three who are elected by the county residents in general elections.

Associate commissioners (non-voting members of the board) also contribute to the accomplishments of the district.

Conservation districts are tasked with promoting the wise and responsible use of natural resources by the development and implementation of programs to protect and conserve soil, water, farmland, woodland, wildlife, energy and riparian and wetland resources.
