BCSD approves competency-based curriculum to keep students from falling behind

The Berkeley County School District will hold a teacher recruitment fair this month.

The event is set for July 11 at MenRiv Education Park, located at 1 MenRiv Drive in Goose Creek.

There are currently 115 teacher vacancies in the district including the 25 2nd grade teachers that were approved in the district budget at the final board meeting of the year.

Principals from schools that have vacancies will be in attendance at the event. Potential teachers have the chance to be interviewed by principals for position at the event that day. Others maybe asked to come by the schools for visits and interviews as well.

"It is really laid back," said Shelley Greene, Certified Employment Coordinator for BCSD.

This is the second year in a row that the BCSD has held a teacher recruitment fair. Twenty teachers were hired from last years event.

"Teachers are not out there like in the past," Greene said. "We are having to dig to find teachers."

Greene said that it is good to be in a rapidly growing area, however the school district is competing with Charleston and Dorchester counties for teachers.

Greene said that the district is looking for teachers with passion and a desire to help the children of Berkeley County.

“We’re looking for them to be totally committed and have a passion to help and educate our kids,” Greene said.

All potential teachers from Pre-K to grade 12 should attend if they are curious about vacancies.

Applications can be completed online and applicants should bring multiple copies of their resume and be prepared to network.

An application must be filled out in order to be hired officially. However, the fair can be attended without filling out an application.
