The Berkeley County School District began its Summer Feeding Program on Monday June 10th.
According to Feeding America 28 percent of children in South Carolina suffer from food insecurity, that is approximately 292,840 children.
The Summer Feeding Program is a program, which is a federally-funded, state-administered program, sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service. Through the program children aged 18 and younger are able to receive a free, healthy breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday during the summer.
"School schedules have changed, but we know that the support our children and families needs remains the same. It is our priority to ensure that our students continue to receive the proper nutrition through out the year and during our summer months. We look forward to our summer feeding program each year, and truly enjoy the opportunity to feed the children of Berkeley County," said Director of Child Nutrition Services Linda Fairchild in an article on the BCSD website.
The program will be active from June 10th to August 2nd.
