Tapping into your Roots: A Genealogy Workshop

From 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Feb. 2, join research experts at a genealogy workshop hosted at Old Santee Canal Park, 900 Stony Landing Rd, Moncks Corner. Volunteers needed

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide needs volunteers for next year to assist in preparing FREE income taxes for the elderly and others who needs help with their income taxes in Goose Creek, Summerville and Moncks Corner. If you do not wish to prepare taxes, there are also leadership positions available such as Client Facilitators. Training is provided on a self-paced basis with individual assistance as needed along with on-line IRS training and testing. Use of your own laptop may be necessary. There is a one week orientation in December and two weeks of training in January. We ask volunteers to be ready to provide one half day or more per week from Feb. 4 through April 12. Band rehearsals begin

At 7 p.m. on Feb. 7, in the Stratford High School Band Room, 951 Crowfield Blvd, Goose Creek, the St. James Wind Ensemble begins rehearsals. There are openings in all sections. Discovery Days-Berkeley Begins!

From 10 a.m. — 4 p.m. on Feb. 9 The Berkeley County Museum and Heritage Center, and the Old Santee Canal Park, 900 Stony Landing Rd, Moncks Corner are hosting an educational family event. Visitors will have a chance to view a collection of rare fossils from a variety of vendors. Living historians will be stationed throughout the park demonstrating their crafts. Included in the program is a colonial blacksmith, 18th century dancing, representatives from South Carolina’s Most Historic Building- The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon and Native American bag making. Indigo-dying, colonial dancing, and candle making classes are scheduled throughout the day. Tickets to the event are $5 per adult, children 6 and under are FREE. Birding for Beginners

Join an educator from 9 – 10 a.m. on Feb. 16 at Old Santee Canal Park, 900 Stony Landing Rd, Moncks Corner for a guided bird walk.

This class is for new birders and will cover all the birding basics, from how to use binoculars to identifying birds by sight and sound. If you are new to the birding world and are interested in learning some basic skills, come join us for a leisurely walk around the swamp as we search for our resident and migratory feathered friends. After a brief introduction, we will cover approximately 1 mile over gravel paths and boardwalk, with some minimal inclines and uneven surfaces. Comfortable walking shoes recommended. Lowcountry Reptors at the Library

The Goose Creek Rotary meets 12:45 p.m. Tuesdays, except the fifth Tuesday of the month, at Gilligans on St. James Avenue. United States Submarine Veterans-Charleston Base meets on the second Thursday of each month except December at the FRA Branch 269, 99 Wisteria Road in Goose Creek. PTSD support group

The PTSD support group meets at 7 p.m. Mondays at the Fellowship of Oakbrook, 1400 Trolley Road, Summerville. The military PTSD support group for veterans, families and friends will provide free anonymous assistance that includes understanding, support, guidance and coping skills for those affected by PTSD resulting from combat or traumatic military experiences. The National Alliance on Mental Illness offers free support groups for individuals in recovery and family members of people with mental illness.
