Wolves’ playoff run begins

The entire Timberland Wolf pack is hungry for districts to begin.

The Wolves baseball team enters play as a number two seed while the Lady Wolves softball team grabs the top spot in their bracket.

Coming into the District 8 playoffs as the second seed, the Timberland Wolves baseball team will host third seed Myrtle Beach tomorrow. The Wolves finished the region regular season with a 6-2 mark, with both losses coming to Region 7AAA champ Hilton Head.

The Wolves will be riding the bat and arm of Cody Craig, who hit just about everything thrown at him this spring and ran the table with a perfect 7-0 record from the mound.

Craig comprises half of the team’s southpaw tandem with fellow leftie Blake Wrenn. Wrenn finished the season with a 4-2 mark on the mound and hit a blistering .480.

Other top hitters for the Wolves this season include Dexter Phillips and centerfielder Johnny Brinson.

The Lady Wolves softball team begins playoff action this week as well, coming into play as the top seed in the District 5 bracket. The Region 7AAA regular season champs ran the table with a perfect 8-0 mark and a 15-3 record overall.

Coach Joy Elizondo has said over the past couple weeks that her Lady Wolves are in control of their own destiny.

Elizondo will rest her hopes on the arm of senior lefty Shelly Grimsley. The senior hurler ended her stellar high school career with a 10-3 mark inside the pitcher’s circle.

“You can’t say enough about Shelly,” she said. “She hits her spots with all her pitches. She throws strikes and doesn’t get herself into trouble with walks.”

The Lady Wolves closed out their Region 7AAA schedule in style with a doubleheader sweep of Lake Marion. Sophomore Vicky Grimsley stands poised to pick up where big sister Shelly leaves off picking up the win in Game One, 14-2. In Game 2, big sister Shelly threw a no-hitter and Macey Gatlin went 3-3.

“We are in a tough district bracket,” Elizondo said of the upcoming playoffs. “The competition is there.”
