“This is a great opportunity for Nick to continue his playing career on the collegiate level for the next four years,” Stags baseball coach Shane Todd said. “Nick is a great athlete and can play just about everywhere. He’ll get some time at second, at third and in the outfield.
“If he hits like he can, they’ll find a place for him somewhere.”
Surrounded by family, friends and teammates, Orvin inked the deal at a noontime ceremony at the school. Orvin joins teammates Michael Dangerfield and Thomas Brittle in signing Division I baseball scholarships. Dangerfield and Brittle signed to play with the College of Charleston earlier this year.
The Bulldogs of The Citadel play in the tough Southern Conference along with The College of Charleston, Georgia Southern, Elon, Coastal Carolina and East Carolina. Orvin realizes the challenges and opportunities that await him and understands what it will take of him to play baseball at the next level.
“It’s a step up,” he said. “It’s a faster game and a better game. You can’t go into this with a chip on your shoulder and expect to do nothing.
“It’s a challenge. You have to step up and be ready to play and do whatever is necessary to make yourself a better baseball player.”
Orvin is currently hitting .526 with 10 doubles, five home runs and 34 RBIs.
“Nick will make the adjustment well,” Todd said. “I expect to hear great things from him at The Citadel.”
Orvin, along with teammate Thomas Brittle, has been selected to play in the North/South All-Star game. The game is scheduled to be played in June at Myrtle Beach.
