Stags' Dennis takes third in state
Stags junior Trey Dennis fired a final round 69 to vault to third in the AAAA state golf tournament at Furman University.
Trey Dennis did exactly what he set out to do last week, and then some.
Berkeley Stags golfer and Region 7AAAA champ Dennis had his sights set on a top ten finish and making the All-State Team at the state golf tournament held last Monday and Tuesday at Furman University.
District Champs!

History was made in Moncks Corner last Wednesday night.
Behind the arm and bat of sophomore Taylor Luff, the Lady Stags captured the District 5 championship 4-0 over the Conway Tigers.
The Lady Stags ran into a brick wall Saturday afternoon in Florence, getting whitewashed by South Florence 9-0 in the two-and-out Lower State Championship series. With the loss, the Lady Stags were scheduled to take on Colleton County, who lost to Stratford in the first round.
Game results were not available at press time.
The game was never in doubt from the first pitch.
Sophomore Taylor Luff threw a one-hit shutout and provided the big stick with a 2-run double in the home half of the first to lead the Lady Stags to a decisive 4-0 win over the Conway Tigers and the District 5 championship.
Stag netters advance to Elite Eight
Stag number one seed Dirk Bair led Berkeley to a 5-2 win over Dutch Fork in state tennis tournament action.
This one was tough.
Coming off a 6-0 shut out win over South Florence in the first round of the AAAA state tennis tournament, the Stags tennis team had a bit of a tougher row to hoe against visiting Dutch Fork.
Stags qualify eight for state
2008 Berkeley track team
Overcoming a difficult week that coach Eric Gambrell cited as being full of distractions, the Berkeley Stags track team qualified in 10 events for the state track meet with eight athletes.
Sprinter Raven White, Region 7-AAAA champ in four events, qualified fifth in the 100 and 200 meter races while setting school records in both with times of 12.37 and 25.12, respectively.

The Stags may have avoided the arm of Sumter’s ace Matt Price, but they weren’t spared the Gamecocks thumpin’ sticks.
Down 2-1 going into the third, the Gamecocks exploded for 11 unanswered runs over the game’s final five innings and pummeled Berkeley pitching for 18 hits in a 12-3 romp at James Bradley Field last week.

Stags lose playoff opener 5-1

There’s an old baseball saying that goes something like this: You can’t hit what you can’t see.
For the Berkeley Stags and their first-round playoff match-up against third-seeded Sumter such was the case. Only able to muster two hits against hard-throwing right hander Matt Price, the Stags fell 5-1 to the Gamecocks in the first round of the District 8 playoffs.
Berkeley’s Orvin signs Citadel scholarship

Berkeley Stags RBI and hits leader Nick Orvin signed a baseball scholarship to continue his career on the collegiate level, inking a deal to play for The Citadel for the next four years.
“This is a great opportunity for Nick to continue his playing career on the collegiate level for the next four years,” Stags baseball coach Shane Todd said. “Nick is a great athlete and can play just about everywhere. He’ll get some time at second, at third and in the outfield.
Stag girls finish second in region meet
Four-time region champ Raven White leads the Lady Stags track team into the state qualifier meet in May.
The Berkeley Stags boys and girls track teams made their mark at the Region-7AAAA track meet held last week at Wando, almost enough of a mark to color the meet blue and gold.
Anchored by four-time region champion Raven White, the Stag girls (152.3) fell a bit shy, finishing a close second to region champ Wando (163.2) by just under nine points, but will be well represented in the State Qualifier meet.
By as late as 6:45 if anyone would have asked about the chances of the Stags playing baseball Monday night, the answer would have been slim and none and Slim just left town.
Perhaps it would have been better if the game had been called.
