Cody Craig unleashes a pass last season. The signal caller has committed to play both football and baseball for Coastal Carolina.
There’s Neon Deion, and Bo Knows, and now there’s Cody Craig.

Craig, a two-sport star at Timberland in football and baseball has verbally committed to Coastal Carolina to play both sports for the Chanticleers.

“I was really impressed with the campus and what they had to offer,” Craig said. “I went up there for a baseball game series. The school really had a family environment. I like the players and coaches both football and baseball wise. It felt comfortable and like the right choice to make.”

Coastal Carolina, located in Myrtle Beach was also a good choice for the Wolves’ rising senior because of its proximity to home.

“I like the idea of staying close to home,” Craig said. “I could have looked at bigger schools but I like the idea that on Saturdays my mom and dad can drive up and watch me play.”

Craig will also suit up for the Chanticleer baseball nine in the spring and knows going in he’s going to be faced with a lot of work juggling both sports.

“When I get to college, it will be more work,” he said. “I love playing for both coaches. They get along real well and will have a plan set up. I’m looking forward to doing both sports.”

Craig, who hit .420 with a pair of home runs and posted a 4-3 with 84 Ks, was named to the Class AA All-State team this spring.

On the gridiron Craig spent the majority of the season handing off to his star back Rockarius King, but don’t think for a minute Craig was nothing more than a middle man in the Timberland juggernaut offense. He can run and throw, attempting 100 passes in 14 games for over 900 yards and 10 touchdowns.

“I didn’t have Cody throw the ball that much because we didn’t have to,” said his dad and coach Art Craig. “We passed in situations. He could double those numbers this year. He may have to.”

Gone is the Class of 2009 that included King, Aldrick Fordham, Storm Moore, Quinton Washington and Caleb Cadell, all of whom signed Division One football scholarships.

While Cody enjoyed cutting his football teeth with the most prolific class in terms of wins in THS history, he’s looking forward for his senior class, the Class of 2010 to step up and assume its own identity.

“I’m really looking for to getting to air it out some,” he said. “The biggest thing about this year is seeing how we adjust after losing all those big time stars. It’s going to be interesting to see how this senior class steps up this year.”

For his dad, it’s a chance to finally unleash his star quarterback and see just what he can do with the football and his arm.

“I was talking with Stratford coach Ray Stackley, and in Ray’s infinite iron man way of saying things he said to me, ‘You have to let your son throw the football.’ I’ve been reluctant in the past to turn him loose because he is my son and I’m coach, but Cody is a true football player. He’s worked hard for everything’s he’s gotten and he deserves everything he’s gotten.”

Craig added that David Bennett, head football coach at Coastal Carolina, said he can’t afford to give scholarships to kids based on who their dad is: “Cody has ability. His leadership is going to get us through a lot of stuff.”
