A fourth quarter touchdown pass from DeVante Thomas to Shamier Jeffery killed a potential Cross comeback bid as third-ranked Calhoun knocked off the ninth-ranked Trojans 24-13 at CHS Friday night.
The Trojans host Hardeeville in first-round playoff action Friday.
The touchdown pass followed a potential go-ahead drive by the Trojans after DeVonte Jenkins recovered a Thomas fumble on the Cross seven-yard line with just over five minutes remaining in the game.
Trojans quarterback Jalen Frazier tried to connect with Jenkins on a sideline pass that was picked off at the 4:32 mark of the fourth quarter. Thomas hit Jeffrey a play later to put the game away.
The Trojans, who dropped to 7-3, 5-1 with the loss, enter the playoff as the top seed in 6-A. The Saints, who had not been scored on in the last three games, improve to 8-1 and are likewise the top seed out of Region 5-A.
After trading punts over the game’s first eight minutes, Cross puts together an 84-yard scoring drive after Calhoun turned the ball over on downs at the Trojan 16-yard line. The drive was capped by a Stephon Simmons three-yard run at the 3:57 mark of the first quarter.
Randy Levine and Louis Simmons sparked the Trojan drive, with Levine getting the ball rolling with a 14-yard gain up the middle, with 15 yards added to the run with a facemask penalty. Simmons followed with a 35-yard run around right end to get the ball to the Saints 29-yard line.
On the next play Levine put the Trojans in the red zone with a 14-yard gain.
Two plays later Frazier’s 12-yard gain put the ball inside the three, setting up Stephon Simmons’ score.
Calhoun would score the game’s next three touchdowns as Thomas threw for a touchdown and ran for another, and Jeffery connected for his first scoring strike of the night with just nine seconds left in the first half.
The Trojans started their comeback with 46 seconds left in the third quarter as Michael Smalls took a pitch left and raced 43 yards for a touchdown, pulling Cross to within five at 18-13.
Following the Thomas to Jeffery scoring strike, Calhoun ran out the clock after a final Cross drive stalled at midfield.
On Friday the Trojans will host their Class-A state tournament first round tilt against Hardeeville. Last week Cross claimed its second Region 6-A title in three years with a 45-0 shutout of Lincoln.
