Summerville – The team that went into halftime was not the same one that came out for Timberland High School.
Wolves coach Art Craig made sure of that.
The heavily-favored Wolves (4-0) pulled away in the second half with 30 unanswered points for a 44-9 victory over upset-minded Cane Bay Friday night, turning a potential nail-biter into a rout over the final two quarters.
“I think it was more about us playing hard than it was about what they were doing,” said Craig, whose team won this game 68-0 last fall. “I challenged them to come out and play as a team, play as a group…I think when we went up 14-0 on them, we let up and thought it was going to be like last year.”
Timberland quarterback Cody Craig had a big night, scoring on runs of 54 and 1 yards and tossing a 21-yard touchdown pass to Bryndon Jiles. He finished with 129 yards rushing on 15 carries and connected on 7 of 13 passing for 68 yards.
He engineered three scoring drives in a row in the second half before sitting out the fourth quarter.
Running back Laron Milford rushed for 73 yards on 10 carries and scored on a pair of short touchdown runs in the second half for the Wolves. Byron Mayes added 72 yards on the ground.
The Wolves finished with 433 yards of total offense compared to Cane Bay’s 241.
Fritz Simmons rushed for 64 yards to lead the Cobras (1-2) on the ground. Quarterbacks Brandon Hall and Zach Wimmer combined to go 8 for 16 for 154 yards, with Wimmer hitting Xavier Moultrie on a 23-yard scoring strike in the first half for the Cobras’ lone touchdown.
