The Berkeley boys’ track team may not have the high profile divas status that girls’ sprinters enjoy, but they do bring back a solid nucleus of sprint and distance runners.

Seniors Daniel Grant, Kalib Law, Victor Williams and Keith Johnson head up the runners.

Grant plans to compete in everything from the 400 to the 3200-meter races. Williams plans to compete in the 200, 400 and 800-meter races throughout the season according to track coach Twon Williams.

“The intent is to show the college coaches their range,” said Williams.

Williams added that Victor Williams also plans to add the 400-meter hurdles to his resume this season.

Youth will also be well represented on the Stags track this year. Sophomores Diontea Thompson and Demonte Reid are expected to compete in events ranging from the 200 to the 800-meter races. Williams will also count on senior Evan McKelvey and junior Ryan Bradley to fill the void as hurdlers compete in other races by running in both hurdle events.

“The boys side doesn't have the natural track talent like the girls so we will have to work with what we have to the best of our ability,” Williams said. “And as always we try to get the others out but it's hard to get kids to come out.”

Track is a unique sport Williams added, in that while it is still a team sport, it is a largely individual contest between runner and track.

“Track is mostly an individual sport. It's just you and the track. You can't hide behind someone else's talent as in other sports.”
