Berkeley Stags celebrate around Tyler Bartley who homered in last year’s game honoring D.J. Weathers.
Area baseball teams have taken full advantage of the warmer temperatures to gear up for the coming season.

That season throws its first pitch on Friday with the American Legion Post 166 Preseason Invitational Tournament.

The tournament kicks off on Friday at the two tournament sites, Goose Creek and Berkeley.

Academic Magnet plays Goose Creek at 5 p.m., and Colleton County plays Cane Bay at 7:15 p.m. in the two Goose Creek games, while Woodland plays Pinewood Prep and Timberland takes on Berkeley in the two Berkeley games.

The tourney then takes the weekend off and resumes on Monday.

Timberland and Berkeley both continue their youth movement fielding teams stocked with underclassmen. “We have some experience,” said THS Coach Chris Pond. “But there will be point in the game where we’ll field all freshmen and sophomores.”

The same fate awaits the Berkeley Stags who have had to deal with an unusual rash of catastrophic injuries that threatens to decimate their lineup.

“I wonder what’s going to happen next,” said BHS Coach Landy Cox. “We lost Hunter Shepherd for a month to surgery and our second baseman Chris Wrenn was in a car accident.”

Shepherd should be ready to play by the time the regular season gets under way, and while Wrenn continues to recover from his injuries, any plans of returning to baseball this season are on the shelf. The Stags will also field a young mound staff following seniors Garrett Gallagher and Matthew Kizer.

“We have some young kids, freshmen and sophomores who can really throw,” Cox said. “It’s exciting to think what these kids can do.”
