“We decided shortly after the girls’ March 5 win to get the rings designed and ordered so they would have time to enjoy and share them before the end of the school year,” THS Principal Kerry Daugherty said.
Daugherty received a “must have” list from the players detailing what they wanted inscribed on the rings. Then he and the Timberland staff pared down what would appear on each ring.
The Class AA state championship rings were handed out in a ceremony at the end of the school day on Friday, honoring the Lady Wolves’ 55-48 win over Keenan on March 5. The win capped an historic 25-2 season.
“I watched these girls grow up,” said athletic director Art Craig. “I watched them laugh, I watched them cry, and I watched them rise from JV to varsity to become this championship team.
“What you girls accomplished was truly amazing.”
Craig went on to sing the praises of coach Cleve Touchberry, who led the Lady Wolves to the team’s second state championship. Touchberry was named Region 7-AA Coach of the Year, Class AA’s Coach of the Year, and tabbed to coach the South All-Stars in this year’s North-South All-Star Game.
“There is no better girls basketball coach in the state than Coach Touchberry,” Craig said.
Craig went on to announce that Nakeisha Whitaker and Rateska Brown had joined teammate Coretta Johnson in signing college letters of intent.
Whitaker signed to play for Francis Marion University and Brown inked her name to play for Temple University.
“Any time three girls sign letters of intent to play college basketball is amazing,” Craig said. “Any time three girls from a Class AA school sign to play college basketball is truly amazing. It is a testament to this team, this school and Coach Touchberry.”
Berkeley County School District Athletic Director Charlie Davis told the team he still gets chill bumps watching highlights of the Lady Wolves win over Keenan.
“This is exciting for the school, for the students, and the community,” Davis said. “This is something you will remember for the rest of your life.”
Berkeley County Schools Superintendent Rodney Thompson congratulated the Lady Wolves’ accomplishments. “When the going got tough you worked together as a team, not as individuals,” he said. “You pulled together and we were all impressed by your teamwork.”
The rings featured the signature Timberland Wolves logo in green and orange centered in the face of the ring and encircled by diamonds. Along the sides were inscribed the player’s number, the team’s record and what specific function each performed for the team: player, manager, statistician or coach.
“You are state champs,” Thompson said. “Congratulations and go Wolves."
