It has become something of a frustrating pattern for the St. John’s Cavaliers this basketball season: losing the close one.

The Cavaliers fell in a squeaker to Thomas Sumter academy for the third straight time, 52-48 in SCISA Region 2 playoff action last Monday night, bringing their season to a close with a 14-10 mark.

It should be noted that seven of SCJA’s 10 losses came by a margin of four points or less, and three of them came at the buzzer.

With a team comprised mostly of underclassmen, the pendulum will begin to swing in the Cavaliers’ favor next season, which has Winters excited. “We had a great defensive game plan against Thomas Sumter Academy,” he said. “We held Chris Payne to 16 points, but we could not get a shot to fall.”

St. John’s luck at the foul line improved against the Generals. The team made 8 of 12 from the charity stripe, but 11 first-half turnovers put the Cavs down by five at the half.  They were able to cut into that deficit in the second half but could only get within four points of Thomas Sumter.

“We won the second half but could not get it done,” Winters said.

Jalen Ward scored a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Damian Hurta added a double-double of his own with 11 points and 12 boards. Rashae Bey chipped in 10 points.

“We only had four turnovers in the second half which kept us close,” Winters said.

There was no doubt in St. John’s second round contest, losing in a blowout to Charleston Collegiate 93-31. The Cavaliers ended the season with a 14-11 mark.
