The scoreboard reads in the good guys’ favor.
Barely.
A shot goes up.
The buzzer sounds.
The shot hits the bottom of the net. It’s good.
Bad guys win. Cavs lose.
Three times in January alone the St. John’s Cavaliers have found themselves on the short end of the scoreboard stick, the latest coming on a buzzer beater at the hands of Dorchester Academy last week, with SJCA losing 57-55 on a last second shot.
“We outplayed Dorchester Academy, except in the second quarter when they outscored us 18-11,” said Cavs Coach Bob Winters.
In the second half, SJCA’s downfall came at the charity stripe.
“We were 3-11 at the half shooting free throws which proved, in the end to be our downfall,” Winters said. “Rashae Bey led the way with 20 points and five steals, but that was about it for good performances.”
Jalen Ward added 12 points and freshman Jordan McElveen recorded a double-double, grabbing 10 points to go with a dozen rebounds.
Against Colleton Prep it was all about dominating a weaker opponent, said Winters, whose Cavaliers won going away 93-30.
Utilizing a mixed starting five to begin the game, the Cavaliers jumped out to a 24-7 first quarter lead and never looked back.
“We had 30 steals as Joe Denton and Mike Lewis had seven and five, respectively,” the coach said. “We also had 30 assists.”
Bobby Winters dished out nine assists without a turnover and six other players had three assists each.
In the win over Colleton Prep, Lewis led all scorers with 20 points while Bey and Joe Denton each chipped in 12.
At 13-8 overall and 6-5 in the region, the Cavaliers will face Faith Christian in the region tournament on Friday at Thomas Sumter Academy.
