The Cross volleyball team comes together in unity before a recent match. The Lady Trojans are perfect in region play this fall.
The Cross volleyball team has put itself in position to capture a region crown, beginning this week with an 8-4 overall record which includes a perfect 4-0 mark against Region 6-A competition.

Most recently, the Lady Trojans played in a tournament at Class AAAA power Aiken High School. Cross, the only Class A school in the event, placed fourth in the silver division.

“We were off on Thursday and Friday to get ready for the Aiken tournament,” Cross coach Damien Johno said. “It helped us. I thought we did very well, considering we were the only A school there.”

Leading into the tournament, the Lady Trojans took down region opponents Military Magnet (25-10, 25-13) and St. John’s (25-1, 25-11) before losing a hard-fought, five-setter to Class AAA Lake Marion (20-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-27, 7-15).

Johno said he felt his team just ran out of gas, with it being the Lady Trojans’ sixth road match in a row.

In the St. John’s match, Jaynae Johnson nearly served the entire game, reeling off 23 service points in a row. During the string, she had 17 aces.

As usual, Yolanda Mack and Chelsie Busbin brought the power at the net, leading in kills. Setter Dana Johno led in assists.

After hosting C.E. Murray Oct. 8, the Lady Trojans don’t play again until Oct. 14 against Baptist Hill and St. John’s.
