Wolves roll then stumble in region play

Coming off a convincing 8-2 thumping of region 7-AAA Bluffton, the Timberland Wolves baseball team stumbled Wednesday night losing to Hilton Head 7-1.

The Sea Hawks pushed across three runs in the top half of the first off Wolves starter Blake Wrenn and never looked back.

In the bottom of the first Timberland answered with their only run of the ball game when Brian Welch reached on an error, moved to second on Wrenn’s fielder’s choice and scored on Cody Craig’s triple to the deepest part of the ball park in right center, one of two hits for the Wolves first baseman.

The Sea Hawks added a single run in the third inning and then put the game out of reach in the sixth, plating three on just one base hit and two costly Wolves miscues.

On offense the Wolves could only muster 5 hits, that coming one day after systematically dismantling Bluffton.

Cody Craig upped his record to 7-0 with the complete game win. Brian Welch had two hits with a double and a pair of RBIs and Jimmy Lail added two hits and 2 RBIs to lead the Wolves offensively.

The loss to Hilton Head drops Timberland to 12-3 overall, with two of the Wolves’ three losses coming at the hands of the Sea Hawks. The Wolves lost a 1-0 heartbreaker back on March 5.

With two games remaining, the regular season finale at Lake Marion on Friday and a makeup game next Tuesday at home again against Lake Marion, Timberland needs to win just one of two to clinch a second place region finish and open up the first round of the playoffs at home on April 24.
