As many eyes were trained on the skies overhead as first base.
Would the rain hold off enough so that opening day festivities for Moncks Corner Recreation Department softball and baseball could be completed?
Moncks Corner Recreation Department director DeWayne Kitts, while being one of those casting wary glances skyward as well as studying area radar on the computer, heaved a relieved sigh after Opening Day festivities concluded at the ball fields.
“This is our 24th year of Opening Days,” Kitts said. “And each year we have always gotten something in, a few games, ceremonies … we’ve never been completely washed out.”
Mother Nature gave everyone a last scare with an early-morning shower but for the most part the skies stayed dry until the first-pitch ceremonies had concluded.
“If it’s not raining we’ll get something in,” said athletic director Ralph Jones. “We were out there working on the fields first thing Saturday morning getting everything ready.”
Ball teams from Tee-Ball baseball to Pony Tail softball paraded across the diamond during pre-game introductions.
Mayor Pro-Tem David Kizer led the first-pitch parade of city officials commemorating the start of the 2008 season and tossed a rainbow strike to get the games started.
Then little Brayden Glover of the Tee-Ball Reds kicked the season off with an infield hit.
And the rain held off.
A full slate of baseball and softball games resume this week as the season kicks into high gear.
“We are grateful for our coaches and volunteers who helped make this day happen,” Jones said.
