Smoke continues to billow from Berkeley Scrap Metal Thursday morning.
A rubber tire particle fire at Berkeley Scrap Metal in Moncks Corner is entering its third day.

The fire started on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. when a pile of rubber about 30 feet high and 200 feet wide likely spontaneously combusted, Moncks Corner Fire Chief David Miller said.

The shredded tires are two percent rubber and eight percent fabric. “The stuff has this rubber base to it,” Miller said. “It’s really difficult to put out.”

The first night tanker trucks delivered about 131,900 gallons of water, Miller said. That doesn’t include water delivered by the hydrant, two ladder trucks and one engine.

Miller estimates about 550,000 to 750,000 gallons of water will have been delivered by the time the fire is out. “That’s a lot of water,” he said.

There were close to 50 firefighters and other responders totaled about 60 the first night, according to Miller.

Miller said 14 fire departments from all over the county responded the first night. They were Moncks Corner, Summerville Fire and Rescue, Goose Creek, Whitesville Volunteer, Moncks Corner Volunteer, Pine Ridge, Macedonia, Macedonia, Cross, Lebanon, Eadytown, Sandridge, Caromi, Pimlico and C&B.

Berkeley County EMS, Berkeley County Water and Sewer and the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control also responded, Miller said.

“We do appreciate the response from all those departments,” he said. “We couldn’t have done it without them. It’s a good example of what can happen when something of this magnitude happens.”

Berkeley Scrap Metal is located at 1190 Ben Barron Lane.
