Let it be known there is no substitute for speed. And in the 2012 Powder Puff Football game, the Berkeley High School Juniors showed what speed can do to win a football tournament.

Donni Robinson, a track state champion as a member of the 400-meter relay team, accounted for both touchdowns in the championship showdown with the Senior Class and four total TDs on the night as the Juniors took home the trophy hardware with a hard fought 13-7 win.

Robinson also scored both Junior touchdowns in the 16-0 win over the Sophomores in the first round tilt of the night.

“The juniors stuck together as a team,” Robinson said. “We just came out to have fun. We believed in our coaches and ourselves.”

Even though Robinson scored the four touchdowns, she said the key to winning was the Juniors’ defense, which allowed just one touchdown over the two games.

“That was the main thing that won the game, our defense,” she said. “We played really tough and tried our hardest to shut the senior running backs and wide receivers down.”

Mekko Brown tallied the lone Senior touchdown in the championship game.

The Seniors earned their shot at the championship with a 16-0 win over the Freshmen as Shelby Jeffcoat scored twice in the one-quarter contest.
