On Friday night the first of the hardware made its appearance with the hoisting of the Stags’ state championship banner before the start of the Berkeley – Goose Creek basketball game.
Former BHS grads Riley McKelvey – uncle to current football player A.J. and cousin to Evan – and Ronnie Ford hung the banner. No sooner had the hydraulic lift begin rolling did the packed house explode in uproar.
“This was a great thing this team has done,” said McKelvey, “and it was an honor to hang the banner.”
Ford agreed: “This was a special moment.”
The team gathered before the home court to watch the banner being raised.
“It was exciting,” said Jaquel Yeadon. “This is something I’ll never forget.”
“It’s an honor to be a part of this team,” said A.J. McKelvey.
Moncks Corner mayor Bill Peagler has declared Thursday (Feb. 4) Blue and Gold Day in honor of the state champions.
Blue and Gold Day festivities will conclude with the Berkeley football banquet sponsored by the BHS Booster Club at 6 p.m. at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge on Highway 52 in Moncks Corner. The cost for the dinner is $10.
Included in the banquet is dinner at 6:30 p.m. followed by a program that includes the presentation of the state championship rings.
On Saturday, Bruce Ellington was at True Value Hardware in Moncks Corner signing autographs while members of the BHS Booster Club sold Stags memorabilia out front. Calendars, state championship apparel, posters and a team highlight DVD are among the items for sale.
The state championship highlight DVD will be on sale through the banquet tomorrow night. Orders can be placed by calling Jerry Brown at 899-8805.
