The Berkeley High School Athletics Hall of Fame is accepting nominations for its inaugural Class of 2012.

The inaugural BHS Hall of Fame class induction will coincide with the Berkeley High School Centennial Celebration during the 2012-2013 school year.

“A school with an athletics program as rich in tradition as Berkeley deserves a sports hall of fame,” said Berkeley Athletic Director Jeff Cruce. “There are few schools with as rich and as storied a tradition as Berkeley High School.”

Berkeley High School opened its doors in 1912.

A yearlong celebration is planned, according to Berkeley principal Kim McLaren. Plans are still being finalized but the celebration is expected to last for the duration of the school year.

The inaugural hall of fame class induction ceremony is scheduled for the season opening football game against Stratford on Aug. 24, which means nominations for the first class are being accepted.

The inaugural class will consist of 15 athletes from the following varsity sports: Football, Baseball, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Boys Tennis, Girls Tennis, Boys Track, Girls Track, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Wrestling, Boys Golf, Girls Golf, Boys Cross Country, Girls Cross Country, Volleyball, Cheerleading, Softball, Boys Swimming, and Girls Swimming.

The first class will include a pair of athletes from each decade from the 1950s to the 1990s, and five from prior to 1950, what will be called the Legend’s Class.

A 10-year post-graduation waiting period is required before a nominated athlete will be considered.

“There are so many deserving athletes from which to choose,” Cruce said. “The committee members will have a tough job coming up with a first class. There will be some quality athletes not making the cut of that inaugural class but they’ll be in consideration for future classes.”

Cruce likened the first class with baseball’s inaugural 1936 class – the first ever inducted into Cooperstown – that didn’t include all time wins leader Cy Young.

“It will be a difficult decision for sure,” Cruce said.

Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Honus Wagner and Walter Johnson comprised the inaugural 1936 class. Cy Young was elected in 1937.

Eligible inductees include any student athlete, teacher, coach, administrator, booster club member or volunteer that has made a significant contribution to Berkeley High School athletics.

Student athletes would have excelled in one sport, earning state and national honors, or lettering in multiple sports before moving on to the collegiate or professional ranks.

The BHS Hall of Fame committee consists of Cruce, Dan Brown, Bobby Mitchell (1957), Denny Hill (1961), Brent Stone, Kathy Jones, John Gooden and Lane Wofford.

Committee terms are two-years and committee members are not eligible for hall of fame induction while serving on the committee.

Cruce also announced the kickoff Hall of Fame Golf Tournament scheduled for Thursday, May 24, at the Berkeley Country Club with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.

The entry fee is $60, which includes golf and meal at the awards banquet.

Also planned is a sports memorabilia silent auction.

“We look forward to this annual golf tournament to become the hall of fame’s signature fundraising event for years to come,” Cruce said.
