Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt announced this week that the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, through the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, has been awarded a DUI grant in the amount of $311,149 to employ three officers.

This federal assistance grant is for a program aimed at preventing fatalities and injuries on roadways in Berkeley County, which for more than three years has maintained one of the highest ratings in alcohol related accidents and deaths caused by impaired drivers.

This grant has been awarded for a period of one year with renewal up to three years.

Officers will be trained on DUI detection, radar, and Datamaster at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.

With the addition of the DUI unit, DeWitt said all efforts will be placed on decreasing the rate of alcohol related fatalities by providing education programs and DUI checkpoints within the county.
