Santee Cooper officials recently presented checks totaling more than $27,000 to Trident United Way and the Berkeley County Museum and Heritage Center. Donations in the amount of $13,900 were made to each respective charity.
Santee Cooper estimates more than 6,000 cars passed through the display of more than 53 light displays running the 1.5 mile course from Santee Cooper headquarters through Old Santee Canal Park from Thanksgiving through Dec. 28.
Celebrate the Season was the idea of Santee Cooper’s David Kizer and Old Santee Canal Park Director Troy Diel, who wanted to direct holiday traffic and dollars lost to James Island and its annual lights festival back to Berkeley County.
“Why give that money to someone else, let’s keep it in Berkeley County and let it benefit Berkeley County,” said Santee Cooper’s Bill McCall during the announcement of the new lights festival earlier in the fall.
Kizer said the success of the festival was a team effort and could not have been complete or had been near the success it was without Troy Diel’s involvement.
