That’s the news Berkeley County School District Executive Director of Facilities James Thomas delivered to the school board at its regularly scheduled June 28 meeting in Moncks Corner.
Under former Superintendent Anthony Parker’s administration, the school had a completion date of August 2011, a date that was never approved by the school board, according to BCSD Public Information Officer Kathie Sizemore.
The estimated cost is $20 million, according to Sizemore. The total project is expected to take 396 days, Thomas said. Impact fees, tap fees and permitting have all been completed.
The district paid $227,950 in transportation impact fees to Berkeley County, Sizemore said.
“The county determines how those fees will be used,” she said. “Our understanding is the majority of these funds will be used to help construct the Sheep Island Interchange, not for transportation concerns in the Cane Bay area.”
School board member Sheldon Etheridge said the impact fees were paid under protest, and the district expects to get those funds back once the South Carolina State Legislature exempts schools from impact fees.
The school district received its notice to proceed from Berkeley County on April 18. The notice states that all permits are in place and the project can commence, according to Sizemore.
The project is well under way and so far weather has not been a problem, Thomas said.
So far 65 percent of the site work is complete and 30 percent of the building steel structure has been completed.
Drainage work is about 90 percent complete and the pickup/drop off road looping around the school is 30 percent complete, according to Thomas. Foundations and footings are 80 percent complete and seem to be going very well, he added.
The roof for the gym and cafeteria is expected to be put in place in early July.
BCSD and LS3P Associates are involved with the project cost management to keep down impact and tap fees and keep permitting up to date, Thomas said.
The school is 116,000 square feet and will have a capacity of 900 students in grades six, seven and eight. CBMS will have four self-contained special education rooms, 21 regular classrooms (seven for each grade), 12 science labs, threecomputer labs and one room dedicated to each of the following: art, band, choral/drama, library, gym (570 person capacity), cafeteria with stage (350 person capacity) and an administrative area.
There will also be an interior and exterior courtyard and a baseball and softball field, Thomas said.
The school is located off Cane Bay Boulevard off U.S.-176 and will be adjacent to Cane Bay Elementary.
