With the coming of 2009 and the New Year, look for something new to be sprouting up in Moncks Corner.
The Old Fairgrounds Market, which will include a flea market and farmer’s market, will be opening in January 2009.
Local developer Gene Woods and partner Buck Robbins have come up with a unique shopping experience to be located on the old Moncks Corner Fairgrounds off Highway 52 behind Ace Hardware in Moncks Corner.
“What we’re hoping to achieve with this market is a unique and complete small town shopping experience for people here in Moncks Corner, Berkeley County and all over the Lowcountry,” said facility manager Wade Arnette.
Unique to the Old Fairgrounds Market will be a concept known simply as The Village, something that Woods calls a throwback to old time Main Street USA and midways at the county fair.
“When you go to the all these flea markets they’re all kind of cookie cutters,” Woods said. “You have a major pavilion or exhibition building that is stocked full of these cookie-cutter booths where vendors get lost in the crowd.
“What we have in mind is putting these high-end vendors like the craftsmen, the wood carvers, the blacksmiths and knife makers into building all their own.”
What Woods envisions is a trip back to Main Street USA around the turn of the last century.
“We’ll have an old time boardwalk framing these stand alone buildings,” Woods said. “We have custom ordered these rustic looking utility buildings to offer each vendor his own individual space.”
What Woods doesn’t want is a “warehouse look” where vendors are crammed together like a tin of sardines in mustard sauce. What he wants is a place where customers can come and shop at their convenience and in comfort.
“Moncks Corner’s population is growing,” Woods said. “I realized there was no place for churches to hold bazaars and bake sales. No place for garage sales. It’s going to be a completely unique shopping experience.”
The 15-acre complex will also provide something Woods feels is sadly lacking in Berkeley County, a good Farmer’s Market.
“We want to provide the farmer with a place to market their produce,” he said. “We want to provide our area farmers with a safe, comfortable and permanent location for them to sell their goods at market.”
The Moncks Corner Market could open as early as January 2009.
