The Francis Marion National Forest will be celebrating National Public Lands Day Sept. 13.
The event will take place at the new and improved parking lot and refurbished interpretative trail that leads to the Sewee Shell Ring in Awendaw on Doar Road.
After the ribbon cutting ceremony, take part in the guided walk to the 4,000-year-old shell ring that boarders a salt marsh along the Intracoastal Waterway. I understand that volunteers are needed to help out with the event.

Last year, there were 110,000 participants in events all over the country and this year the national plan is to exceed that milestone by 10,000 additional participants. In addition, there is a nationwide effort to plant 1 million trees in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).
During the CCC years, 1933 – 1942, these young men planted over 3 billion trees helping restore America’s deteriorating forest. In addition they developed public parks, fought fires, built fish hatcheries, fire lookout towers, hiking trials and many other projects on public lands.
Walter Atwood, Chairman of the CCC Legacy group: “Our nation not only deserves to be reminded of the CCC’s impressive history, but also to be inspired to shape successful programs for young people that encourage community service and conservation.”
Projects are being planned in every state on or around Sept. 27.
South Carolina has four events in the works and they are the Charleston Naval Weapons Station in Goose Creek, contact person Terrence Larimer (843)764-7951; J.Strom Thurmond Dam and Lake in Clark Hill, contact person Jay Weidman (800)533-3478; Sewee Shell Ring in Awendaw and Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, contact person David Davis (803) 895-5325.
National Public Lands Day began in 1994 with three federal agencies and 700 volunteers, today there are 8 federal agencies as well as many state and local agencies involved. You can be a part of this wonderful program through volunteer services.
