Life’s a beach for Cross families
The Shulers, Connie and O’Dell, along with their children and their families recently spent 10 days camping at Myrtle Beach.
Joining them were Rae Beth and Bobby Fultz, Lauren Austin, and Art, Dana, Jay and Brant Shuler for fun in the surf and sun.
With two in all-star ball games, this group did some traveling back and forth!
Jay Shuler played summer baseball with the Harleyville team. Jay and his teammates played in the all-star finals, winning three in Aiken and losing the fourth for an excellent record.
Brant Shuler played with a younger group of teammates on the Providence Hurricanes. The Hurricanes traveled to Hartsville where they won the first all-star game, and returned for the second Hartsville game. Congratulations, Jay and Brant!
Joyce and Will Hutto also enjoyed time away in July at the beach.
Joining them were Marty, Winnie, and T.J. Steese of Cross. T.J. enjoyed camping where he met friends his age from many places who also enjoyed biking, swimming, and playing on the beach.
Charlie and Sally C. Barrett of Spartanburg enjoyed the charm of Edisto Island for their first vacation there. Joining them were their daughter Sandy, husband, and children from Lexington, and their son Christopher and wife Elise and their two children from Charleston. While at the beach Sally was able to visit with some of her first cousins for an afternoon at another beach.
G.H. and M.A. Cross traveled from Valdosta, Ga., to join their lowcountry siblings Wilbur Cross, Marvis Solley, Nellie Williams, Lois Sellers and other family members for a week at the beach. This has become a traditional event for the Hilliard Cross family. What a great way to relax and yet keep in touch with family.
Celeste and Ellison Singletary had an extended vacation at the beach in their RV. While at Myrtle Beach they enjoyed dining out, great musical shows, shopping, and lots of time in the surf.
If you haven’t been camping lately, you’d be surprised to notice how many other states have discovered the beaches of Carolina, as well as the Canadians coming in summer and winter.
Happy Birthday
Pat and Gene Austin enjoyed an evening out to celebrate Pat’s birthday last week.
Get Well
Rae Beth Fultz had surgery last week and is recuperating at home. Wanda Flint has also been hospitalized and is now at home recuperating with her daughter Paula’s assistance.
Sympathy
Everyone was distressed to hear of the death of John Ham. He will be missed everywhere, especially at the WLA Action Center here in Cross where John and Chip have worked diligently for years.

Hello my name is Kenneth L.McClary and I attend South Carolina State University and Where My major is Criminal Justice. The College Democrats of America is an organization of over 75,000 progressive students on over 1500 campuses who engage in political participation on a local, state, and national level. The CDA plays an integral role in raising political awareness and responsibility among students all across the country, including non-members, and independent voters. For example, local chapters engage in voter-registration drives, get out- the-vote and voter protection efforts, in addition to their efforts on behalf of Democratic candidates. 2006 proved to be a landmark year for voter turnout among youths, with an increase of two million votes among 18-29 year olds from the 2002 midterms, with most of those votes coming in highly contested districts. The 2008 and 2010 elections will be increasingly dependent on youth voter turnout, and the CDA plays a significant role in shaping that influence, and in turn, the future of our country. A hallmark event for the CDA is their annual convention, held this year at the University of Denver, from Aug22-28. The convention provides an opportunity for College Democrats and young leaders from all across the country to network and attend speeches from a number of high profile party leaders, thereby learning about effective strategies for voter mobilization. You can find out more about the convention or the CDA at http://www.convention.collegedems.com. As a member South Carolina State Young College Democrats, I am writing to request financial assistance in attending the CDA Convention. I believe my attendance at the convention would provide me with the knowledge and experience necessary to grow our university’s chapter of the College Democrats, which aims to make young students aware of the political process in their community, in Cross South Carolina, and in our country. If youth voter turnout increases at a similar or greater rate than over the past few years, the Democratic Party will be successful in our district, state-wide, and nationally in 2008 and beyond. Registration fees for the convention are $65, and housing costs are approximately $300 .My expected travel costs are $370 for a Plane from South Carolina to Denver. Including travel expenditure, the total cost of my attendance will be $835 I am able to contribute $417.50to amount; therefore I would be extremely grateful if you could possibly contribute $417.50 for my participation. Any generous contribution you are able to make would be highly appreciated, and I believe, highly beneficial to the Democratic Party, particularly in our district. My attendance comes with the goal of increasing both the size and effectiveness of our chapter, which provides for a more politically active, aware, and engaged youth electorate in the 6th district. I eagerly await your reply to my request, though if you should have any questions, feel free to contact me at mcclaryke@aol.com or kmcclar5@scsu.edu Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Kenneth L.McClary South Carolina State Student Leader Leadership = Influence, No More and No Less Leadership Does Not = Power
