The Berkeley County Progressive League conducted its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Life and Legacy birthday celebration on Jan. 18 at the Moncks Corner AME Church.
Mr. Richard Dixon, the program's presider, masterfully facilitated the agenda.
The celebratory program began with the singing of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” followed by scripture, read by the Rev. Virginia Brown; a prayer by the Rev. Lowell Greene, and a response selection by the Progressive League’s Combined Choir, titled, “Don’t Do it Without Me.”
The body was greeted by the Rev. Richard Harkness, host pastor. His warm greeting was made even more meaningful as it was followed by a moving selection performed by the “HeArts Youth Choir, Heart to Heart Ministries, titled, “Clap Your Hands.” Ms. Latasha Ravenell followed the youth performance with a magnificent interpretative Praise Dance as Donnie McClurklin’s version of “Total Praise,” rang out in the background.
Additional selections were offered up by the Combined Community Youth Choir. Their renditions of “Sold Out,” and “God Is,” were just phenomenal.
The Day Dawn Baptist Church male Choir provided the introductory and closing songs for the speaker, and performed in their usual outstanding manner, “The Old Ship of Zion”, and “Walk around Heaven.”
The keynote speaker was the Honorable Joseph H. Jefferson Jr., South Carolina House District 102. He was introduced by Berkeley Council Member Caldwell Pinckney.
Jefferson’s subject: “For God’s Sake, Stand up and Help Somebody.” His moving, factual and timely message was well received by all in attendance and addressed the occasion in a most outstanding manner.
Allen practices what he preaches
Sean Allen, a son of Henry and Arline Allen, and a grandson of Susan and Abraham Gourdine of St. Stephen, is putting his words into action.
The 21-year-old North Carolina A&T civil engineering major has dabbled in community service projects since his freshman year. He has picked up trash and helped Habitat build a house, but he always wanted to do more.
He says he was inspired by his best friend, who has been volunteering with Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
Last year he signed up to volunteer there and was paired with a 7-year-old boy. He states that they have done a lot of good things, and they have had a lot of fun.
Sean recommends shadowing someone volunteering in an area that interest you, and further stated: “A lot of people always want to volunteer. It’s just hard taking that first step, that leap of faith to sign up.”
Because of his consistent willingness to volunteer and give back to others, Sean was recently featured in the Greensboro, North Carolina, News and Record.
We congratulate Sean and his family on this recognition and wish him to know that his hometown, parents and grandparents are very proud of him.
