Macedonia tree lighting draws a crowd

One hundred people attended the first-ever Christmas Tree Lighting in Macedonia took place Dec. 5 at the Macedonia Fire Department.

The Macedonia Crime Watch sponsored the event. The crime watch is an extension of the Macedonia Community Action Project. Crime Watch Patrol President Nital Mills was the spokesperson. She said this is our first tree lighting but it was not the last.

Plans are already started for next year, to be bigger and better.

Pastor Turner from Oak Grove PH Church opened the program with scripture words from the Bible and prayer. Pastor Chris Peagler of Victory Baptist read about the birth of Jesus, and Pastor Thames of Hickory Grove PH Church ended the program with scripture reading and prayer.

There was singing by two talented community groups, The Guerry Family and Lead by Faith.  After the program the switch to turn on the lights was done by Chief Chris Mills’ son in honor of his grandfather, Cleveland Mills.

Candy canes were given out to the young and old. Everyone enjoyed the program and fellowship.  It was nice to see a large turnout … thanks to the community for coming out and celebrating this first-time community event.

Bonner Elementary

H. E. Bonner Elementary School received both the ABC (Arts in Basic Curriculum) grant and the DAP (Distinguished Arts Program) grant for the 2009-2010 school year.

The ABC grant total is $5,205 and the DAP is $14,000. The grant total of $19,205 was given to Bonner to support its arts integration program. The funding allows Bonner to have more opportunities to bring in residents for all grade levels, to have fine arts performance, supply materials to support the infusion and to infuse the arts into core curriculum to help students learn easier.
