Providence Baptist owns fascinating history
The history of Providence Baptist Church dates back many years.
In 1859, there was a meeting and six baptisms on profession of faith; these six people formed the Point Comfort Baptist Church.
Soon after others began to unite. There were 12 charter members.
These ancestors began looking for a tract of land upon which they could build their church. Mr. John Jackson donated a tract of land located a few yards east of Hood's Chapel M.E. Church on the present Hwy. 17-A.
Membership increased, and Point Comfort Church enjoyed prosperity from the time of its construction until the year of 1890. Due to circumstances, members of the church proceeded to move the church to a new location.
Until the church was built the members were faithful in worship with meetings held in a local Woodmen of the World building.
The construction was completed in January of 1891. On Jan. 17, 1891 the church changed its name to Providence Baptist Church. As the years flew by the church saw need for additional space as membership grew. The building of a new sanctuary began in early 1950.
In the decade of the fifties, Providence Baptist Church joined with 32 other churches at the St. Stephen Baptist Church to constitute and organize the Seven Baptist Association. The following 30 years proved to be an era of addition and expansion.
A building was erected in May 1956 that became known as the educational building. In the 1960s more Sunday School classrooms were build. In March 1966 a discussion at a meeting was a plan for construction of a parsonage.
Membership grew to over 200. By the mid-seventies, 60 members departed and formed anther church known as Victory Baptist located on Mail Route Road.
Plans for a new sanctuary began in 1976. The church now has a large day care center.
Throughout the years of growth and expansion as well as struggle and hardship, Providence Baptist Church continues to run its race.
