Virginia Williams’ social studies class at Timberland High sponsored a school-wide campaign to raise money for the victims of the recent earthquakes in Haiti.
The students had been following the news reports on Channel One News each day and wanted to do something to help. After brainstorming ideas, they decided to ask for donations.
During their lunch breaks last Thursday and Friday, donations were solicited from staff members and students in the cafeteria and cafeteria lobby. A total of $270 was raised.
Faculty and staff members who donated $5 or more to this cause were given a dress-down day on Friday. Students who donated $1 or more were given a sticker permitting them to wear hats in the building on Friday. The money raised
was given to the American Red Cross - Lowcountry Chapter for Haiti earthquake relief.
The event is continuing this week. More students have now become involved. The campaign for Haiti Earthquake Relief now has the Library Media Teen Advisory Board (TAB) and THS Delta GEMS teaming together to raise money for the earthquake victims.
