Special honorees attend Friendship Homecoming

Friendship U.M. Church held its 2009 Homecoming on Nov. 8.

Special guests and honorees were those who grew up attending Friendship as children who are now ages 88 to 102. Topping the list were sisters Mrs. Thelma Grooms Shuler of Holly Hill and Mrs. Mae G. Singletary of Sandridge, ages 102 and 99 years young. These two ladies grew up on Groomstown Road just off of Hwy. 311; their parents were Mr. Tom and Mrs. Mary Grooms who also lived a long, fruitful life.

On her 100th birthday Mrs. Thelma told of her school days in Cross. At that time the old school house on Hwy. 311 only went through sixth grade. For seventh grade Thelma was taken to Summerville to live with her Uncle Jeff and Aunt Edith Grooms to attend school.

One of the anecdotes that she told was about her pink bloomers. Some of the other students laughed at her pink, homemade bloomers while theirs were store bought! She also said that Aunt Edith told her to always call her Aunt Edith in town; when they returned to the county, she could be called “Aunt Duck.”

Ninety-nine years ago, Mae Grooms and Thelma Grooms were in the Cradle Roll Class with Irma C. Grooms as their teacher. Mrs. Mae has her certificate to this day and was the oldest in attendance at homecoming.

Others who attended and were also recognized at Homecoming were Mary C. Rodgers, 91; and Lina Bradwell West who will have her 90th birthday on Dec. 2, and her sister Maude B. Flood, age 88.

Others recognized but unable to attend were Louise C. Caison of Summerville, Wilbur Grooms of Springfield, Meminger Cross of Cross, Nellie C. Stone of Moncks Corner, Ethel C. Langley of Moncks Corner, and Adam Cross.

Others recognized were the future church. Bailey Nicole Lail, Timothy Dwayne Cross, William A. Suggs II, Gabrielle M. Suggs, Carson R. Prince, Jacob D. DeHay, Isabelle G. DeHay, and Hunter W. Cross are children who’ve been baptized by the Rev. Carroll Cash since he has been minister at Friendship. Former ministers since 1898 were listed in the morning bulletin.

The program for the morning enjoyed by all was presented by “The Heart Notes”, a gospel group from the New Hope area. Roy Kimzey, Debbie Kimzey and Joe Johnson are the members of “The Heart Notes.”

Special music was also presented by Dottie Hurt, RaeBeth Fultz and Brenda Frank. A bountiful meal and lots of fellowship were enjoyed by all after the program.

‘Almost annual’ Christmas show

All starving artists are inviting all to the “almost annual” Christmas Home Show featuring the works of local artists Theresa Hanniford Camlin, Carolyn Hill Mullinax, Sandy Sanders and Karey and Philip Wilson.

The show will take place on Saturday, Nov. 21 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at 1513 Cedar Avenue in Moncks Corner. For more information call 761-5406.

These artists are suggesting that we buy local, and while in Moncks Corner, also visit Mepkin Abbey to see the 2009 Creche Festival featuring beautiful crèches from around the world. For reservations for the Creche Festival, call 761-6580.

Pineville Christmas

A Christmas concert by Van High and Friends will be performed for the benefit of the Berkeley North Historical and Cultural Committee at the Pineville Chapel at 5 p.m., Dec. 6. A reception will follow at the home of Keith and Betty Gourdin.

Craft Fair

The Spring Hill ladies will participate in the Fall Craft Fair to be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Faith Sellers Senior Center located at 312 North Laurel Street in Summerville. Come out and join the fun and see the crafts of the local people.

Congratulations

Congratulations to the family of Morgan Grace DeHay who entered this world on Nov. 4, 2009 weighing 7 lbs., 3 oz. She was 19 ½ inches long.

Her parents are John and Kelly Peagler DeHay. Maternal grandparents are Frankie and Alice Peagler and paternal grandparents are Wayne and Shirley DeHay, and Kathy and Hubert Harold.

The two very proud great-grandparents are Marie Peagler and Dot DeHay.

Morgan has two sisters who greeted her at home, Chelsie (11) and Kaitlyn (4).

Sunday Sing-Along

Spring Hill United Methodist Church will host the Fifth Sunday Sing-Along on Nov. 29 beginning at 5 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

Members of New Hope and Friendship will join them. This is the beginning of Advent, the perfect time for family and friends to join others in song and refreshments.

Jamie DeHay

Jamie DeHay continues his work with Cirque Solaire and Disney World in Florida. For his 24th birthday on Nov. 16, Jamie flew to New York City to celebrate with some of his friends who live nearby. Congratulations, Jamie.
