Second-grader sells toys for troops

While other children are asking their parents for the next hot summer toy, Anthony Gotz is trying to sell his old toys – not to buy new ones but for a good cause.

The seven-year-old Pinopolis resident and his parents, Kim and Wayne Gotz, held a yard sale July 12 -13, selling toys and other items.

All of the proceeds will go to buy supplies for three troops fighting in Iraq.

“I sold my toys to help the troops,” Anthony said. “God told me it was the right thing to do.”

Anthony, a rising second-grader at Saint Johns Christian Academy in Moncks Corner, raised $100.50 with the help of yard-sale-goers and his parents.

Items sold included toy cars, trucks, and a toy John Deere Tractor.

“It’s been his nature to be generous,” Kim Gotz said about her son. “There was not one child that didn’t leave here with a toy.”

The packages will be sent to help Army Private First Class Michael Tucker and Marine Corporals Christopher Keagy and James Tanner. The three troops are stationed in Iraq and are all from South Carolina.

The Gotz family found the troops on the website anysoldier.com.

The site lists items that the troops are missing and would like to have overseas in Iraq.

Items listed on the site include Propel water, Slim Jims, Rice Krispie Treats, envelopes, tuna packets and sour gummy worms.
