After months of extensive recruitment and input from local government officials and civilians alike, the Town of Moncks Corner officially announced David R. Brabham Jr. as the new Police Chief of the Moncks Corner Police Department.

The selection process — which began in March — per Town Administrator Jeff Lord entailed sorting through 21 candidates expressing interest in the post from across the country.

Hopefuls who most closely matched the community's criteria for a new law enforcement leader, as detailed in a corresponding press release, were interviewed by a seven-member advisory committee, comprised of individuals from varying social, institutional and faith communities.

"But in the end, it was someone close to home that stood out above the rest as the best person to lead the Police Department forward," said Lord.

Brabham, who began his career in law enforcement with the Moncks Corner PD in 2005, brings 27 years of experience to his new role.

Prior to his latest hiring, Brabham also served the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office in the capacity of supervisor of the Canine Unit, Drug Enforcement Unit, Training Division and Special Response Team commander. He was eventually promoted to Captain of the Community Services Division and later was appointed as Major of Investigations, while also graduating from the 250th session of the FBI National Academy.

"I am confident Mr. Brabham is the best choice for our Town," observed Moncks Corner Mayor Michael A. Lockliear. "He not only has the experience and technical capability, but also has a proven track record of serving with honesty and integrity. As our community and law enforcement worldwide adapts to the challenges of accountability and recruiting, those are the most important traits a Police Chief can have."

In addition, the mayor thanked Interim Police Chief Steve Young for his ability to lead while the Town carefully deliberated during the five-month selection process.

Brabham, a Trident Technical College graduate, softball coach and worshipper at the Grove Christian Church in Moncks Corner, will be sworn in and subsequently take command of his new crime-fighting team at the next Town Council meeting, scheduled at 6 p.m. on September 15 at Town Hall, located at 118 Carolina Ave.
