01) Speeding car crash Moncks Corner

A South Carolina Highway Patrol incident report indicates that a motorist of a stolen vehicle who tried eluding Berkeley County police on the afternoon of Sept. 12 was catapulted about 28 feet after losing control and hitting a tree on Copper Store Road in Moncks Corner.

The driver— who didn't survive the crash — was identified as Damarius Williams, 39, of Cordesville, according to the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division. The man's body was reportedly found in a ditch with the recovered speedometer reading 100 mph.

In addition, it was noted that the impact of the collision split the stolen car in half following a high-speed chase along the Berkeley County portion of U.S. Route 17A. The deceased party had been trying to surpass a truck in the moments prior to his demise.

The trooper pursuing the suspect was reportedly attempting to conduct a traffic stop, which prompted the alleged offender to speed away. The officer's car wasn't damaged, per reports, as the patrol trooper remains on active duty.

The Berkeley County Coroner's Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are continuing the investigate the fatal incident.
