Poetry Contest: The Berkeley County Library System is hosting an open-mic session at 5 p.m. on April 21 at the Moncks Corner Library for individuals whose poetry was chosen to qualify for one of three prizes. Selected finalists will have an opportunity to read their poetry at the event. Cookin’ in the Creek: 11 a.m.-2 p.m., April 22.Goose Creek City Hall, 519 N Goose Creek Blvd, Goose Creek. Admission and parking are free. Food trucks from around the Lowcountry will be showcasing the best items on their menus. Free children's games, GCPD K-9 shows, music and touch-a-truck vehicles will all be onsite. Each vendor will compete in our first ever wing contest. Attendees will be given two tickets at the ticket booth near the stage to vote for their favorite wings. The vendor with the most tickets will win the People’s Choice Award. Other contest categories consist of “Most Original”, Mayor’s Choice and the overall Cookin’ in the Creek Champion. Three Little Pigs: The Berkeley County Library System (BCLS) in collaboration with the Coastal South Carolina Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), invites families with elementary-age students to participate in Three Little Pigs STEM Challenge on Saturday, April 22, 2023 from 1-2 p.m. at Sangaree Library, located at 595 Sangaree Parkway, Summerville. Black Food Truck Festival: This annual celebration of Black businesses and culture returns during the weekend of April 22-23, starting at 12:30 p.m. on both days, at the Exchange Park Fairgrounds in Ladson. The Black Food Truck Festival has brought bands from across the Southeast to perform at the festival each season. As they represent different genres from funk/soul to jazz, each band has given a musical experience you can dance and sing to. Admission is $25, or purchase a two-day ticket for $45. Ticket prices increase on April 1. Tickets do not include food. Children age 12 and under are admitted for free. No pets allowed. Parking is free. Purchase tickets at www.blackfoodtruckfestival.com.

Arts Fest: The 40th annual North Charleston Arts Fest is set to take place May 3-7. The celebration of arts and culture highlights the talents of regional and local artists and performers in the areas of music, dance, theatre, visual arts, and literature. Performances, activities, and exhibits take place in a variety of venues throughout the city of North Charleston with free admission for all. Residents and visitors can enjoy concerts, dance performances, art demos, kid’s programs, a variety of exhibitions, an Arty Block Party, and more. Splish Splash: The City of Goose Creek Recreation will host "Splash Creek," on the week of Spring Break (April 9-16, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.) and open weekends (April 22-May 21, from 10-6 p.m.). Free Judo and Jujitsu Classes for Military Veterans: 4:00 to 5:30 P.M. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at the Athletic Fitness center opposite Sam’s Gym at the Naval Weapons Station. All classes are free and open to veterans from all branches of service for Judo and traditional Jujitsu classes. Beginner and advanced classes are taught by United States Judo Association black belt instructors, including 2nd degree instructors Ricky Herndon and Glen Chears. Participants will be required to join the United States Judo Association ($60/year, $35 for active-duty personnel) and purchase a uniform (available on site) if they don’t already have one.
